Becoming B’nai Mitzvah: TAS-Style

Becoming a B’nai Mitzvah, a child of the commandment, is one of the most monumental events in a young person’s Jewish life. According to tradition, when young men and women reach the age of thirteen, they are recognized as adults in the Jewish community and are given the honor and opportunity to take on that role.

The process of preparing to become a B’nai Mitzvah lays the groundwork for the B’nai Mitzvah student to take their place in the adult Jewish community. Our 4th grade students begin to acquire the Hebrew skills necessary to learn the blessings and prayers so that they will one day lead the congregation in prayer. Each B’nai Mitzvah student at TAS also spends significant time with the various members of the clergy team, learning to chant Torah and discussing the deeper meaning of their Torah portion.

Parents who have been through the B’nai Mitzvah process at TAS remember it fondly:

I had two most memorable moments; first, when my son carried the Torah around the sanctuary and all of our family and friends were there and then when my son was blessed on the bimah by the Rabbi and Cantor.

Watching my daughter conduct the service and read from the Torah as if she had been doing it her whole life was the most memorable part of the experience for me.

For me, the run through with the rabbi was the most memorable. I could see my son transform and gain confidence right there. Plus it was really nice for him to have this one on one time with the rabbi.
